New State-of-the-Art Stroke Unit Set to Revolutionize Patient Care in Kenema….
The Kenema Government Hospital is proud to announce the opening of its first ever stroke unit. Equipped with state-of-the-art technology and staffed by highly skilled team of medical professionals, this unit aims to transform the way stroke patients are diagnosed, treated, and rehabilitated. This is the second such unit in Sierra Leone.
Giving his Keynote Speech, the Deputy Chief Medical Officer, Dr. Mustapha Kabba, said that the stroke unit is a testament to the Ministry of Health’s, under the leadership of Dr. Austin Demby, commitment to providing the highest standard of medical care to stroke patients. With strokes being one of the leading causes of death and disability worldwide, the establishment of this dedicated unit marks a significant leap forward in tackling this medical emergency.
Dr Kabbah added that the unit can boast of a range of cutting-edge technologies designed to expedite the diagnosis and treatment of patients.
He continued that, “from advanced imaging techniques to telemedicine capabilities, the Stroke Unit will ensure that patients receive prompt and accurate assessments, enabling the medical team to make informed decisions as swiftly as possible.”
Chairing the program, the Medical Superintendent, Kenema Government Hospital, Dr. Abdulai Tejan Jalloh said, one of the standout features of the new stroke unit, is its multidisciplinary approach to care. The team, which comprises of neurologists, nurses, physical therapists, and rehabilitation specialists, works collaboratively to provide comprehensive and personalized treatment plans for each patient.
Dr. Jalloh stated that, the Unit is Equipped with a dedicated rehabilitation area, patients benefit from tailored therapy programs aimed at maximizing their recovery and helping them regain their independence.
He added that, as part of the hospital's commitment to community education and awareness, the stroke unit will also offer outreach programs to educate the public about the signs and symptoms of strokes, emphasizing the importance of early intervention and seeking immediate medical attention.
The Kenema District Medical Officer (DMO), Dr. Donald Grant, expressed enthusiasm for the new unit, stating that; “with the latest technology and highly skilled team, we are confident that we can make a real difference in the lives of those affected by strokes."
Dr. Grant said that the new unit is not only focused on acute care, but also places strong emphasis on post-stroke rehabilitation.
The Deputy Chairperson at the Kenema District Council, Mrs. Francess Jambawai stated that, the opening of the unit is highly welcomed by the local community and healthcare professionals. She said that the unit is expected to alleviate the burden on emergency departments and provide a dedicated space for stroke patients to receive the specialized care they require.
The Deputy Mayor, Kenema City Council, Mrs. Rugiatu Sulimani Koroma said that, the opening of the new unit is a significant milestone for the local healthcare landscape.
This holistic approach ensures that patients receive the best possible care from the moment they enter the unit until their successful rehabilitation.
